I am not an expert or medical professional, nor do I claim to be. I am simply a girl medically diagnosed with Celiac Disease and found myself lost, desperate, confused, depressed, and alone. No matter how much support I had, unless you live this lifestyle, people just don’t fully understand it. That’s what this site, and page, is for, to help EVERYONE understand some of the things people with Celiac Disease go through on a regular basis.
There are SO many questions when it comes to being diagnosed, making [any] lifestyle change, and just trying to make it through from day-to-day.
What is GLUTEN?
Celiac.org states Gluten is a general name for the proteins found in wheat (wheatberries, durum, emmer, semolina, spelt, farina, farro, graham, KAMUT® khorasan wheat and einkorn), rye, barley and triticale – a cross between wheat and rye. Gluten helps foods maintain their shape, acting as a glue that holds food together.
Simply stated, gluten is the protein found in wheat, barley, and rye.
What is Celiac Disease?
Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disease that occurs in genetically predisposed people where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine. It is estimated to affect 1 in 100 people worldwide. Two and one-half million Americans are undiagnosed and are at risk for long-term health complications.
When people with celiac disease eat gluten, their body mounts an immune response that attacks the small intestine. These attacks lead to damage on the villi, small fingerlike projections that line the small intestine, that promote nutrient absorption. When the villi get damaged, nutrients cannot be absorbed properly into the body. – celiac.org
Is it treatable?/Is there medication?
Currently, the only treatment for celiac disease is lifelong adherence to a strict gluten-free diet. People living gluten-free must avoid foods with wheat, rye and barley, such as bread and beer.
Ingesting small amounts of gluten, like crumbs from a cutting board or toaster, can trigger small intestine damage. – celiac.org
